Making your Halloween costume is a fun way of marking this holiday, especially if you have a kid to help you along the way. For making the dress you will need some yellow felt, orange felt and white felt (if you want to make the dress in three colors). The amount of felt you need depends on the person you create the costume for. Children costumes require about 1 yard of felt from each color, while the adults will need about 3 yard of each felt or even more, depending on their size.

Cut equal strips from each one of the colored felts to be used (yellow, orange and white) and sew them together so as to form a trapeze. Do not forget to let holes for the arms. The yellow strip should be on the bottom and longer than the others, the orange should be in the middle with medium length, while the white should be on top, having the smaller length of all.

To make the dress stay flared, purchase some wire and sew it at the bottom of the dress (at the bottom of the yellow layer). If you want something that will be more rigid and will maintain the rounded shape all day long you can go for a hoola-hoop or metal wire.

Last, use velcro on the shoulders to make the dress easier to put on and off. If you do not want the straps to have velcro, you can go for two zippers or buttons. Also, you can place the zipper in the back and sew the straps normally.

The Hat

The second piece of the candy corn costume is the hat. For this, you should cut tow triangles of the white felt and sew two of their edges together so that it looks like a cone. Then stuff the hat with stuffing material (preferably cotton so that it will be soft, comfortable and easy) and attach two long and narrow straps from the same fabric so that you can tie the hat under the chin.

Wear this costume with a white turtleneck (or orange if you are going to use only yellow and orange for the dress) and yellow tights if it gets cold for Halloween in your area. Also have a basket where you can place as many candy corns as you want. You can eat them yourself or share them with your friends. Either ways, this will be a fun accessory that will add value to your costume!
