What is Candy Corn?
Candy corn is probably one of the most famous of Halloween treats! Children and adults love them and would do everything for a sweet candy kernel. Moreover, many think that the Halloween was precisely invented so that people could eat as many candy corn kernels as they pleased!
Of course, candy corn is far younger than Halloween. Their production started in the 1880s, when George Renninger from Wunderle Candy Company mixed together water, corn syrup, sugar, marshmallow and fondant. Then placed 3 different layers into a corn kernel mold and called it a candy corn. The candies were an instant hit among farmers and entered the Halloween tradition quite quickly.
In the early 1900s the Goelitz Candy Company (the nowadays Jelly Belly Candy Company) started producing the tricolor candies in California. They were so popular among the mostly agrarian communities that other vegetables were used as models for different types of candies. Yet none of them reached the level of success that the candy corn did.
The recipe for the candy corn is simple. Mix the sugar, corn syrup, water, marshmallow and fondant until the blend is homogenous, then pour each layer of candy, one by one. At the beginning this process was done manually, from March until November. Yet, nowadays this is a computerized process which takes place all year round in the candy corn factories from all over the world.
